Food Summit
Dear Editor: The Sitka Food Assessment work group would like to express our deep gratitude to the following sponsoring organizations and individuals who made the inaugural Sitka Food Summit possible on Nov. 14.
To Alaskans Own, the Alaska Longline Fisherman’s Association, SEARHC’s Diabetes and Community Transformation programs, and the Sitka Local Foods Network, thank you for monetary support to create this seminal event. To the Daily Sentinel, Raven Radio, KIFW, Sitka Soup and Sitka.com for helping us to get the word out about the event. To Sitka Community Hospital’s Basement Bistro management and staff, Susan Hoyt, the Sitka Food Co-op, St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm, Mary Wood and Cathy Lieser, thank you for nourishing the participants with delicious food as well as some local food. To Mollie Kabler for keeping us on track as only a stellar moderator can do and Martha Pearson, Jasmine Shaw, Lauren Havens and Peter Bradley for serving as table hosts for the discussions. To the Centennial Hall staff, especially Dave, who worked with us to set up the space just the way we needed it for peak participation. To Clara Gray and Lauren Fetzer who helped ready all the flip charts for the event. To the UAF Cooperative Extension Service for providing “food” information. To Andrianna Natsoulas, Carole Knuth, Clara Gray, Walleen Whitson, Lauren Fetzer, Renae Mathson, Garrett Bauer, Sabrina Cimerol, Jean Frank, Carolyn Servid, Peter Bradley, Sherie Mayo, Kerry MacLane, Maybelle Filler, Michelle Putz, Lauren Havens, Abby Long, Caitlin Blaisdell, Marjorie Hennessy, Courtney Bobsin, Mary Wood and Tracy Gagnon for sticking with the food assessment project over the last year and contributing vital energy and expertise to this important community effort.
We look forward to having Sitka’s Food Assessment Indicator Report out in January 2014 to help guide further food system work in the community. It will be posted online at www.sitkalocalfoodsnetwork.org, www.islandinstitutealaska.org, and other interested organizations. A limited number of print copies will also be available. For more information, contact sitkafoodassessment@gmail.com. Eat well.
