Fundraiser Thanks
Dear Editor: On behalf of the Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society board of directors, we wish to give a “HUGE THANK YOU” to all who attended, contributed and donated to our recent fundraiser.
A spaghetti dinner, a live auction including desserts was held this past Saturday, Oct. 26. The event was held at the Sitka Elks Lodge 1662, sponsored by the Sitka Emblem Club 142. We got our “Pink On” and decorated the Lodge to follow the theme. The event was a huge success! One of our best ever!
We also want to thank the Sitka Sentinel for all the good press they gave to us for this event. Also KIFW, AJ for the interview on Problem Corner, and publicity on Raven Radio, and the Sitka Soup.
The delicious spaghetti, salad and bread were prepared and served by our Sitka Emblem Club 142. Judi Blankenship, the hard working chair and her awesome crew provided us all with the yummy meal. President Mindy Lowrance has chosen our SCSS for the next two years as her president project. Without the amazing support of Sitka Emblem Club 142, we would not be able to have our raffle, our auction, or our fundraisers! Big kudos to all Emblem Club ladies!
The auction items were absolutely unbelievable and the desserts donated were one of a kind. Auctioneer Dave Miller was excellent, wonderful and kept things lively and so much fun. In spite of other events going on Saturday as well, the lodge was pretty full, the items donated were all wanted and bid on! Opportunities were also given to buy last minute raffle tickets.
There were so many generous donors and helpers who made this event such a success. Everyone we asked just jumped in and said “yes” for sure we will donate!
Our Sitka merchants are always ready and willing to help. We certainly would never leave anyone out. A gratitude of thanks to all who came and supported us. We truly appreciate you all.
We did things different this year with our raffle drawing. We drew the three prize winners the next day, Sunday, Oct. 27, at the lodge. The prizes were the beautiful “Sue’s Diamond’’ queen-size quilt, Stereo North $250 cash, or two nights at any Aspen Hotel located in Alaska. All winners were called and chose one of the three choices. All were elated and so happy to have their names be drawn! Another opportunity to win will be again next year. We thank all who purchased our raffle tickets.
Our mission is to honor, educate, comfort and inspire individuals and families affected by cancer. With these raised funds we are able to continue to help people in Sitka and their families who are dealing with cancer, giving mini-grants and support.
Thanks for blessing us and so many others, Sitka.

Heartfelt Thanks
Dear Editor: Iʼd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who gave of themselves and their families to organize the Kaagwaantaan ḵu.éexʼ on Oct. 26. My endurance was happily tested staying all the way to the end, at 3 a.m.
I appreciate the hard work, and also I know how great have been the losses of the Kaagwaantaan and the Dangle family: we honor the memory of Nels Lawson Sr., Charlie Daniels and George Young. I wish to thank them for inviting me to help be a part of their healing process. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of it. Thank you kindly to the Kaagwaantaan who have helped save this traditional event of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. They outdid themselves.
My donation that night was given with a grateful heart for the clan, and for all the people of Sitka who are so civic-minded. I have seven children, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. My beloved Dad cooked over 40 years at Mt. Edgecumbe where I attended school from 1947-1954, as did my brothers Chester, Ben and George Worthington Miyasato. God bless us all.
And a big thank you again to those who sponsored the wonderful ḵu.éexʼ, as well as all those who work to make Sitka such a special place through so many different organizations and events. God bless every family and everyone. Love, Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 Mother, Tlingit/Haida Tribal Member, Japanese descendant and proud mom, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma, Harriet Beleal. Hooray for Harriet! Just kidding. God bless, amen.

Quilt Sale Thanks
Dear Editor: Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) would like to thank the people of Sitka for supporting the quilters at Sitka Lutheran Church by purchasing quilts on Alaska Day.
As usual, the success is due to the publicity provided by the Daily Sitka Sentinel. KCAW and KIFW and the generous people of Sitka. Thank you.
