Scholarship Contribution
Dear Editor: The Tulong Aral Scholarship Committee would like to thank Patrick O’Donnell for his generous contribution to this local scholarship created to support students of Filipino heritage in pursuing higher education.
The Tulong Aral is less than a year old, but we have already awarded eight scholarships to students studying teaching, engineering, health occupations, and business. The scholarship can be used for college, certificate programs, and other trainings. Thank you, Mr. O’Donnell, for your part in supporting higher education.
Our long-term goal is to endow the awarding of two $1,000 scholarships each year. The 2023 scholarship opens this spring. Details can be found at www.sitkakids.com. Donations can be made on the scholarship page or at Sitka High School.
Thank you for your support.
Kari Sagel, Sitka,

Haunted Ship Thanks
Dear Editor: We wanted to give a HUGE shout out to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kukui and their Haunted Ship non-perishable food drive!
It was amazing, and the Salvation Army of Sitka received between 500-600 pounds of food to share with folks who are in need. Yay, yay, yay to the CGC Kukui and crew and the amazing residents of Sitka. Seriously, it is so generous, and we are grateful, grateful, grateful. Thank you ever so much!
Also, please don’t forget to sign up for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance. Signup days are 2:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays now through Nov. 18. Also, 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 12.
Please bring the needed items (identification for all adults in the home; identification for the kids in the home, birth certificate, shot records, Denali insurance cards; and proof of residence, something with your address on it).
Come down and talk to Major Sabrina and get signed up for both holidays at the same time … two for the price of one!
Prayers and blessings,
Major Sabrina Tumey,
The Salvation Army Sitka Corps
