WhaleFest Run
Dear Editor: Last Saturday, we had over 65 runners and walkers compete in the annual WhaleFest run starting and ending at Whale Park. It was a sunny but blustery day and several participants spotted whales on the course!
I would like to thank everyone who participated, especially my volunteers: Emily Pound, Chris Horan, KK Prussian, Cindy Edwards, Carolyn Black, Caroline McIntyre, Aaron Prussian and Randy Hitchcock. Thanks to Brian Beall for all the years he directed this race and for starting the race.
Finally, thank you to the WhaleFest team, led by Tiffany Pearson, for their support.
Bridget Hitchcock, Sitka
Library Friends Thanks
Dear Editor: I would like to thank the Friends of the Library for funding the book club at Sitka High School. Covering the cost of books eradicates financial barriers that would preclude many students from joining.
The benefits of equal access to books as a vehicle for promoting literacy cannot be overstated, and the book club appreciates your efforts toward this end. The students are excited to begin their first novel, democratically chosen by them and made possible by you, to discuss the text in terms of current events and literary value, and to reflect on its meaning in their own lives.
