Elect Himschoot

Dear Editor: For many decades Sitka has enjoyed the benefits of smart hard-working people representing us in the Legislature. We have the opportunity to continue this valuable tradition by making Rebecca Himschoot our representative.

Her reputation for applying real science and logical thinking earned her national recognition as a Keet Gooshi Heen teacher. After 18 years of teaching and two years on our Assembly, Rebecca has established herself as someone willing to commit long hours to making Sitka better for all of us.

We can now elect to have Rebecca’s skills and strong commitment applied to solving problems for the benefit of the entire state. Thank you, Rebecca, for offering to serve as our representative.

BMS Shoutout

Dear Editor: A big shout out to Blatchley Middle School!

I am most fortunate to be serving with AmeriCorps at Blatchley Middle School. Wednesday’s event was just one more reason to have pride in being part of this special place. It was student council election day. For weeks, students have been campaigning – evidenced by the creative, thoughtful and funny posters decorating the hallways. This afternoon more than a dozen students presented speeches in the gym.

All candidates displayed a sincere desire to serve, to be part of a solution, to make their school a better place for everyone. The students in the bleachers listened closely and appeared to take their job of voting seriously. Of course, there was some foot stamping and such but it seemed to me that you could tell that students were truly engaged in the experience of community building.

I shouldn’t have been surprised. Every day I see the dedication of the teachers, administrators, and support staff. Their guidance, discipline and caring is unfailing. Students will find out the results of the election tomorrow but as “trite a trope” (I borrowed that from one of the campaign speeches) as this may be, in my book they’re all winners.

Reaffirmation

Dear Editor:The recent “reaffirmation” by the Assembly of Resolution 22-027 notwithstanding, I wish the community of Sitka a happy and prosperous Columbus Day.
