Indonesia Quake

Dear Editor: Sitka is connected to the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami through AFS international student exchange.

We hosted Frilly Utami in 2013-14 and Jim and I visited her family and friends in Palu this past February. Some of you will remember her. We thankfully heard from her yesterday. She sustained an injury while crawling out of a building with coworkers before it collapsed behind them. Her immediate family survived, their house stands and they have water and food. Her parents lost four of the five Indonesian-style “Starbucks” cafes they owned.

Frilly told us she appreciates all words of support on social media knowing that the world indeed cares and help is coming.

We will be spearheading a Sitka-style fundraiser for Indonesia and Frilly’s family after we explore with her how best to accomplish this.
