Melodrama Thanks
Dear Editor: The Paris of the Pacific was presented for its third run in Sitka, this time as part of the Alaska Day Celebration. Again the Sitka audience performed admirably – three bravos to all in attendance: young and old, for your yays, boos, sighs, and extremely excellent enthusiasm.
The cast and crew rose and flew beyond the high standards set for a melodrama, thank you to all of them. One of the things that struck me for this show: Ask yourself, how many melodramas have a Steinway grand piano for the piano player to play and accompanied by a first rate violinist? The ‘‘Paris of the Pacific’’ may be the only one. It is fitting however. Sitka may no longer be the ‘‘Paris of the Pacific’’ but we are darn sure the ‘‘Paris of Alaska.’’ If you haven’t seen the show yet – it will be back and I suggest you don’t miss it. Happy Alaska Day.
Jeff Budd, Sitka

Writing Contest
Dear Editor: We would like to extend a big Alaska Day thank you to the 116 brave participants who had the courage to put pen to paper and share their thoughts on past and future celebrations.
Great thanks go to the good and kind teachers and parents who encouraged the writing and submission of these essays and to the winners who so bravely read their work for the community.
Thanks also to the Daily Sitka Sentinel, Raven Radio, the Alaska Day Committee, and Alaska Women Speak for their help and encouragement.
    Until next year! Gratefully,
Rose Manning for

Hames Volunteers
Dear Editor: It is impossible to overemphasize the significance of the Hames Center and the efforts that go into sustaining this community resource. I am amazed by the talented people who dedicate their time to serve here, offering expertise in-kind and mobilizing passions for the benefit of others.
I specifically want to thank Alicia Haseltine from Sitka Physical Therapy for leading an aerobic and strength training 101 workshop at the Hames Center last week. Alicia volunteered her evening to lead a class on how to develop an exercise routine and correctly use gym equipment.
Thank you, Alicia, and the countless other “Hames heroes” continually striving to make recreation and education accessible to our entire community!
