Vote Walker, Drygas
Dear Editor: Bill Walker and Heidi Drygas are our first choice for governor and lieutenant governor. They have demonstrated the integrity, leadership, experience and capacity to address the challenges facing Alaska.
In his first term, Gov. Walker expanded Medicaid, making medical care affordable to tens of thousands of Alaskans overnight. His unilateral action was a key factor in stabilizing our entire health care system; many of our rural hospitals would not have survived the pandemic without this federal funding. Gov. Walker made difficult but necessary choices to balance the state budget. He improved the state’s relationships with Alaska Native people by acknowledging Tribal sovereignty on child welfare issues.
He refused to tolerate sexual harassment at the highest levels of his administration. Finally, Gov. Walker demonstrated his interest in being the governor for all of Alaska by regularly visiting communities across the state – including Sitka – not just the areas where his support was strongest.
All of these actions stand in stark contrast to the performance of our current governor.
Given a second term, we are confident that Gov. Walker will deliver on his commitments to rebuild our economy, invest in education, revitalize the Alaska Marine Highway System, protect the right to privacy and reproductive freedom guaranteed by our constitution, and manage the Permanent Fund for the long-term benefit of Alaskans rather than his own political future.
We hope you will join us in ranking Walker and Drygas first when you vote.
