Police Blotter
Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
October 17
A school said a student was truant for the second day. Police were unable to reach the student or his family.
A caller said two men have been coming around her property in the 1300 block of SMC and she didn’t want them there after learning a tenant had caught them looking in her wallet.
A trespass order was signed by the library against a male.
A caller said a relative was talking of suicide and due to her mental state and level of intoxication was refusing to get help. After talking to officers, she agreed to get help.
At 10 p.m. a caller reported hearing pounding from inside the men’s restroom on Harbor Drive, and also seeing a man passed out near the bike racks. They were gone when officers arrived.
At 10:31 p.m. a caller at 212 Katlian reported seeing a man arguing with two women, and at one point they seemed to be pushing one another. A woman told officers she had been in a disagreement with her significant other.
October 18
At 12:21 a.m. a caller in the 3800 block of HPR said a bear came out of nearby woods. A bear horn scared it off. At 12:38 p.m. the caller said the bear had come out of the woods again and this time when scared off it went into a common recreational area.
At 4:34 a.m. a caller in the 4000 block of HPR said a bear was in the front yard, not for the first time, and was scared off back into the woods.
At 9:13 a.m. a man was reported sleeping in the bathroom at Lake and Lincoln. Officers talked to him.
A caller said a flag pole on a building on Spruce Street was damaged.
A caller said an intoxicated woman kept calling a cab company to ask for money for alcohol and threatening to kill herself if she didn’t get it.
At 1:48 p.m. a caller said her Karelian bear dog got loose along the parade route. It was found later.
At 7:51 p.m. a woman was reported lying outside of a building on Lake Street. She said she was waiting for EMT. She was taken to a hospital.
A woman said she wanted her boyfriend out of her vehicle at Eliason Harbor. Later, she said he’d gotten out of her car and no help was needed.
At 10:25 p.m. a caller said that at 9:30 p.m. she’d let someone borrow her new car that wasn’t registered yet and he hadn’t returned it. At 11:30 p.m. it was reported located and returned.
October 19
At 3:14 a.m. a caller said a friend was talking of hurting himself, and would shoot officers if they came. Police were unable to get more information or to reach the caller.
At 9:21 a.m. a 911 caller said a man was sleeping in the bathroom at Lake and Lincoln. No sign was found of anything wrong, police said.
A caller asked to speak to an officer about an incident over the weekend. An officer requested a form for a cha furnishing liquor to a minor.
At 12:35 p.m. a caller said a bear had been sitting in her yard in the 700 block of Lake Street for about 10 minutes, eating berries and rifling through her garden before wandering off toward the high school.
At 3:19 p.m. a caller in the 4700 block of HPR said a bear was in the woods behind her home.
At 7:52 p.m. a caller said a juvenile-sized bear was near his trash can in the 3200 block of HPR. It went toward a neighbor’s home when the caller yelled at it.
At 10:26 p.m. a bear was reported near 1924 Dodge Circle.
October 20
At 1:17 a.m. a caller said she’d received a text from a number she didn’t recognize saying her boyfriend was going to die tonight. Officers weren’t able to contact him at work because the business was locked and music was loud, and officers couldn’t be heard.
At 12:51 a.m. a caller said a friend was having issues with a man she’d ended a relationship with. Officers found no lights on and heard no sounds at the man’s home. The man later called the PD and spoke to officers.
A caller said a neighbor was trying to gain access to her home through her attic, and she had found blood inside her home. Officers found no evidence of a crime.
At 3:23 a.m. a bear was reported in trash on Bahrt Circle.
At 9:21 a.m. a hospital staff member reported a patient left without permission in an unknown direction. Police gave the patient a ride back.
At 10 a.m. a wheelchair found next to a vehicle next to the long-term care building turned out to belong to a man who lives in long-term care, who had gone out for a smoke.
At 11:23 a.m. the harbor department was notified about a boat going down at the drive-down float at Eliason Harbor.
At 12:47 p.m. a resident reported a bear tore apart a chicken coop and all five chickens were missing, in the 700 block of Lake Street.
At 2:06 p.m. a man was seen leaned over the handrail on the sea walk near the SJ campus. He seemed fine when police checked on him.
Fireworks were set off at 7:10 p.m. on Harbor Drive. No one was around when police checked. A call soon after reported fireworks in three locations. Police disposed of the trash left behind.
Another call was received about fireworks around Katlian and Lincoln street at 8:55 p.m. Police talked to a few suspects and the case is under investigation.
At 7:26 p.m. a bear reportedly killed a few ducks in the 800 block of Lake Street. The bear was scared away into the lake.
At 10:10 p.m. police checked on a house after flashlight beams were seen inside. It turned out to be a person who was checking on the house while owners were gone.
At 10:45 p.m. a bear got into garbage in the Indian River subdivision, and was growling and not scared off by residents, police were told. Police said they would contact the landlord about the trash problem in the morning.
October 21
At 4:31 a.m. a resident said she heard what sounded like someone entering her home. All was secure and nothing amiss when officers checked.
Sitka Police
Randi Castillo, 26, was charged Thursday on a warrant for failure to comply with PED and two counts of violating conditions of release, failure to comply with PED, and consuming illegal substances.
Kim Elliot, 64, was charged with driving under the influence Thursday, and refusal.
Gunner Daoust, 21, was charged with violating conditions of release by consuming alcohol and being at a bar.
Daniel G. Smith, 37, was charged Saturday night with driving with a revoked license and violating conditions of release.
In Court
Jesse Jeske, 39, was sentenced to 15 days for driving with a revoked license. He was also sentenced to 10 days for violating conditions of probation.
Joseph P. Morgan, 49, was fined $1,500, with $1,000 suspended, for retaining a king salmon during a closed period. He is to pay $300 in restitution to the state. He will be on probation for a year.
Coast Guard
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter Saturday night picked up a 78-year-old man with abdominal pain from Noyes Island, off the west side of Prince of Wales Island. He was flown to Sitka for medical care.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department dispatched one ambulance after 10 a.m. on Thursday. Six ambulances were sent out on Friday, two on Saturday and two Sunday.
At 4:56 p.m. Saturday a fire truck was sent to 701 Indian River Road after burned food triggered the alarm.
