Support
Dear Editor: I am writing for three reasons.
As a commercial fisherman/boat owner, and as a longtime coach and fund-raiser for student activities, I am so appreciative of the support shown for both propositions by Sitka voters. Thank you!
I have a long record of encouraging and supporting women for public office in the tradition of my mother’s activism. I recently had the opportunity to meet personally with Rebecca Himshoot while we were photographed for her campaign for the Legislature. I am so impressed with her character, her positions, her record on the Sitka Assembly, and how she listens and asks great questions. Rebecca is a great candidate and has earned my vote.
I attended the Indigenous Peoples Day events at which Mary Peltola, our new congresswoman, was in attendance. I had the chance to meet, visit personally, and work with her in a small group of fishermen. I was impressed with this fellow fisherman. She knows the language of fishing, weather, water, the fish, and Alaska. As a focused listener and note taker she instilled confidence that our messages were being heard. Her speech to a standing-room-only crowd at the large gathering was one of inclusion and working together. What a leader! I am thrilled to vote for her too.

Sales Tax
Dear Editor: As a result of large, private sector investments the city is enjoying stronger than expected growth in sales tax revenue.
By all appearances this trend will continue into the future.
Perhaps it is time for the town to eliminate sales tax on groceries, a move that would benefit everyone.

Alaska Day Pie Sale
Dear Editor: The congregation of Sitka Lutheran Church would like to most sincerely thank the citizens of Sitka for their personal, verbal and financial support, as well as their outstanding pie-eating abilities demonstrated during the annual pie sale on Alaska Day!
Additionally, we would like to thank Raven Radio, KIFW, and the Daily Sitka Sentinel and for their advertising of this yearly event. One-hundred-eighty pies were sold between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sitka is an amazing community!

Filipino Community
Dear Editor: Listening to the story on Raven radio Thursday on Filipino American Month prompted us to write this letter to express our appreciation to the Sitka Filipino community.
The Filipino community contributes so much here and through their strong work ethic, sense of family and community they make Sitka a much better place to live. Oh, and we neglected to mention the fine cuisine! We never miss a fundraiser that features Filipino food. Maraming salamat!
