House Race

Dear Editor: I am writing to voice my support for the re-election of Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins to the Alaska State House. I have had multiple interactions with both JKT and Dr. Wein over the past many years, and although both men have many positive attributes, only one is truly the right person for the job of representing us at the state level, in Juneau.

Dr. Wein is the person I would want to care for me if my appendix or gall bladder needed to come out, but he is not the person I want speaking for me and our Southeast communities on a wide variety of topics. JKT has a proven record of listening to people and working for positive changes.

I was also disappointed a few months ago when I heard Dr. Wein say something like Jonathan would be thankful if Dr. Wein won, because he could go back to Yale and finish his degree. (Wish I could remember the exact quote.) It is not up to anyone else to decide what someone finds as the most important and rewarding thing to do at any point in their life, and I believe that Jonathan is right where he needs to be, right now. I want to keep him there. Please vote on November 6 and bring a friend to vote too.

Kathy Ingallinera, Sitka

House Candidate

Dear Editor: I am writing to state my support of Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins as our state Representative. JKT has been a voice for coastal Alaska and regular people, not the oil industry or special interests.

Rep. JKT was an important vote and advocate in ending the lavish tax credit subsidy program for oil companies that has cost Alaska literally billions of dollars. He has been a strong supporter of us, Alaskans, getting our fair share from oil.  (I recently saw an ad which was billed as the Alaska Business Report Card giving JKT a low grade as business friendly. The organization who published this “grade” includes many members of the oil industry. A low grade from them might be seen as an “A” by those who represent the interests of ordinary Alaskans.)

Rep. JKT has worked on successful ethics legislation, supported Alaska Native languages and culture. JKT helped make PFD Automatic Voter Registration a reality in Alaska through his 2016 ballot initiative. And JKT has been a strong advocate for commercial fishing and an opponent of halibut and king salmon bycatch by the Seattle-based bottom trawl fleet.

On so many issues, we are fortunate to have Jonathan as our representative. He combines thoughtfulness, preparedness and intelligence, making him a formidable legislator and effective proponent of the issues that affect us all in Southeast Alaska.

I urge you to vote for JKT.

Dr. Charles Morgan, Sitka
