Legislator Report Card
Dear Editor: I wish to provide an alternate perspective on the recent letter to the editor written by Larry Crews. While I appreciate Mr. Crews taking the time to work towards informing voters, his letter was factually inaccurate and therefore misleading.
Mr. Crews implied that rural legislators get “good” grades from the Alaska Business Report Card, and that Rep. Kreiss-Tomkins is not at one with his peers in the Bush Caucus. However, nearly every rural legislator receives a grade below a C+ from the “Alaska Business Report Card.”
Democratic senators Donny Olson (Golovin) and Lyman Hoffman (Bethel) receive D’s. Republican Senators Bert Stedman and Gary Stevens get C’s. With few exceptions, only Railbelt Republicans get “good” grades.
It is understandable that Mr. Crews, in his efforts to better inform voters, fell prey to the organization known as “Alaska Business Report Card.” The group was founded by the oil industry and extraction industries, and is known as an entity that exists to perpetuate big oil interests.
Like two-thirds of our district, Jonathan voted to repeal the oil tax cut (SB 21). According to this “Report Card,” those voters in our district would also receive a failing grade.
I urge all voters not to be influenced by the tactics of big oil’s attempt to control Alaskan politics. I grew up in Sitka and have known Jonathan most of my life. He is one of the hardest workers I know. Anyone in Sitka who knows Jonathan knows he gets an A.
