JKT Support

Dear Editor: I am writing in support of Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins for state House from Craig, the southern end of our legislative district. JKT is the only candidate in this race with legislative experience, and has shown that he is not only responsive to his constituents but has an encyclopedic knowledge of the details of the issues and legislation before him. His opponent has neither.

As a retired Alaska State Trooper and a former Sitka police officer, I appreciate Jonathan’s vote across party lines for the Republican-sponsored Omnibus Crime Bill, SB 91, and the diligence Jonathan and all of the members of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican and Democrat, did in moving the legislation forward. The bill is big and complicated, and its full consequences are yet to be seen, but it is clear that the traditional approach of criminalizing trivial behavior was ineffective in deterring crime and too expensive to maintain. Jonathan is the most capable candidate in terms of knowledge and critical thinking skills to study the implementation of this legislation and make revisions as they are needed.

As a school board member, I appreciate JKT’s awareness of the issues facing our schools and his ability to stay focused on maintaining education funding. He knows the issues backwards and forwards in the Legislature, and also has a ground level understanding that comes from spending time in our community and in Craig and other POW Island schools. His experience as a legislator keeps him grounded in the possible when many in Juneau use education bills and hearings as avenues to vilify administrators, teachers, and students.

I encourage you to vote for Jonathan, our experienced and capable representative.

Bob Claus, Craig

A Big Thank You

Dear Editor: On behalf of the Sitka Cancer Surviver Society Board, we would like to thank the SEARHC leadership, and Martha Pearson from the health promotion department, for sponsoring the ‘‘Stomp Out Breast Cancer’’ walk event that was held last Saturday

Special thanks to Lesa Way, the event coordinator, for her hard work and for her awesome team, Karen Mead and Emily Clark.

Thanks to all who joined us in the walk. It wa wonderful seeing children, young people and adults who have or now currently dealing with cancer, walking with us. Despite the bad weather, our spirits were high.

The T-shirts and the pink cancer handouts were wonderful.

We thank all who participated as the funds raised help us to continue to provide $500 grants to those who are dealing with cancer here in Sitka.

Thanks, again, SEARHC.
