Sitka Gardeners

Dear Editor: I’d like to give a BIG bravo to the gardening folks in Sitka. Be it the city staff, Tree and Landscape Committee, Pioneers Home staff, and all of you other gardeners.

I am amazed on my walks by the beauty you have created. The walkway along Crescent Harbor to Totem Park is especially well done.

Bravo and thank you.

John Murray, Sitka

BHV Open House

Dear Editor: This Sesquicentennial Alaska Day marked another Brave Heart Volunteers Annual Open House and fundraiser with our soup, bread and dessert sale.

It is interesting that serving bread and fish soup in Sitka goes back 150 years when the company had a bakery and fish soup was prepared daily and distributed from the soup-house to each family according to its wants. (Del Norte article by Chris Allen 10-20-17 Sentinel)

Thank you so much especially to all who attended and made our event the most successful ever! Each purchase of our homemade meal allows us to continue our free respite care and companionship for individuals and families who are facing the challenges of end of life, illness, dementia, isolation, care-giving or grief.

Many thanks to our stellar soup makers Steve Warren, Sherie Mayo and Dennis Longstreth. We would also like to thank everyone who brought bread, rolls and desserts; Patricia Welsh, Steve Warren, Ruth Culp, Karen Boyer, Jean Longstreth, Aleeta Bauder, Jean Frank, Michele Friedman, Kathy Kyle, Sherie Mayo, Max and Bonnie Cottrell, Phyllis Hackett, Andrea Thomas and Mary Chambers.

Thank you to our ladle masters Susan Padilla and Steve Lawrie for serving up our soups with help from Michele Friedman and Deborah Cady.

We appreciate Cheri Hample and Ursula Zertuche for being our cashiers.

Our publicity crew of Auriella Hughes, Jean Frank and Ruth Culp were great getting the word out. Thank you also to our new office and volunteer manager Maury Hackett for her help.

A special thanks to the Balkan Conspirators – Debbie Leveque, Coral Pendell and Michael Litman – who provided fun and uplifting music as our guests mingled.

Many thanks to the Hames Corp. and Sea Mart for the gift certificate.

Thank you to our volunteers and Sitka for such amazing community support, we couldn’t do it without you!
