Pie Sale Fundraiser

Dear Editor: Once again, thanks to everyone who took part in the annual pie/dessert sale on Alaska Day in the fellowship hall of Sitka Lutheran Church.

Besides the bakers, there were the planners, the set-up crew, the cutters and servers, the cashiers, and the clean up crew.

Thanks, also, to the Alaska Day Committee who included our annual pie and dessert sale in the event schedule, to Sitka Bottling for saving cardboard flats for our use, and the Daily Sitka Sentinel, and radio stations KCAW and KIFW for the PSAs.

We think the sale of such tasty offerings began in 1994 or 1995 when we were raising funds to replace the stained glass windows following the 1993 fire in our building. Whenever it started, it has become a tradition to anticipate. Let the countdown to π 10.18.18 begin!

This year, during a time of an unprecedented number of disasters around the globe, the proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to the Lutheran Disaster Response through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Please, Slow Down

Dear Editor: We need to slow down. The weather is getting worse again, and with it our driving needs to get better. Most drivers start slowing down at this time of year and being more cautious, but there are always a few who I swear if anything speed up. I get it, no one wants to be on the road longer than they have to in a monsoon, but we’ve only got a handful of road and going faster is a very, very poor way to save time. Driving 10 miles per hour faster would be about as effective as skipping the toothbrush in the morning. Neither is a good way to get ahead.

I want to live through another Sitka “winter” so please, please slow down and encourage others to do the same.

William The Giant, Sitka
