Thank You, Sitka
Dear Editor: I know the election results are not yet official, but I wanted to express to Sitkans how grateful I am for all the support I received during my campaign. I love this city, I really care about the people who live here, and I have never felt more connected to this community than I do now. Although I will not be on the Assembly this year, I will continue to direct my energy toward the well-being of Sitkans via other avenues in the city. And I hope to empower others to do the same.
I also want to hugely congratulate the newly elected Assembly members, School Board members and Mayor. (I know the results haven’t been certified, but I believe you are a great fit for our city’s needs and I look forward to collaborating with you in the future!)
This is not the end of my involvement with this community – it is just the beginning. Thank you, Sitka! As always, feel free to reach out to me.
Diana Dapcevich, Sitka
No ‘Heroes’
Dear Editor: I have been searching for a suitable capstone for my comments on COVID-19; folks are no doubt tired of hearing from me, and I am frankly tired of writing. So I’ll put paid to it all this way: The suitable epigram to encapsulate the response to this jumped-up flu virus came out of the Vietnam War, a comment on our strategy there from the sarcastic: “We had to destroy the village in order to save it.” Just so.
The medical community’s advice to our executors is destroying our economic and social fabric in order to, well, save us. This is a salvation we can well nigh do without. In closing, then, to all the “heroes” in white coats who participated in the engineer of this catastrophe (the response, not the virus): the next time you’re feeling messianic, or similarly salvific, kindly visit your inclinations on, say, China. You’ve done enough for us, thank you very much.
