Dear Editor: Old Harbor Books and Sitka Kids Facebook would like to hug the community of Sitka who showed up for kids. We raised $3,014.46 in the Dolly Parton pay-it-forward, which saw more than 120 kids choose a free book at the bookstore. Old Harbor Books transferred remaining funds to a gift card which will fund a similar event in the future!
So many thanks to give out. We did not record donors, so we do not have names to share with you. Many thanks, however, to Peggy Fedoroff for being an organizer and the first donor. Sitka Rotary International made a very generous donation. They are well-known for supporting literacy efforts. Sitka Emblem Club 142 also boosted our total. One of the Emblem Club's main missions is the support of community literacy.
To our many unnamed donors, we salute you. We knew your faces as you came through the door and you made our day. We had two exceptionally large donations from the public. Such generosity!
Thanks to Leigh Rector and Jasmine Horton for cheerfully adding hundreds of people and interactions to their busy day at work. Reading books with children matters more than ever! Thank you for making it happen.
At some point, the pay-it-forward stopped taking donations. For those who missed out, we would suggest donating to Sitka Imagination Library at donate.imaginationlibrary.com. Make sure you specify Sitka. Or email a check to Sitka Imagination Library c/o Sitka Emblem Club #142, PO Box 142, Sitka, AK 99835. Include SIL in the memo line. Sitka Imagination Library provides monthly books to 275 children in our community. They make a difference in our children’s lives.
