In their first meeting of the season, the Sitka High Lady Wolves came out on top against the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves, but not without mid-game twists.
“I think we did really good on not relaxing and coming out with energy right away,” Sitka senior Tiffany Elefante said of the opening minutes of play.
By the end of the first quarter, the Wolves were up 18-7, and 30-15 at the half.
But “the third quarter, it was rough,” Elefante said.
The Braves’ strong full court press combined with a well-timed offensive pushed the game within 2 points late in the third. The closest score was Sitka 39, Edgecumbe 37.
“Every game, our third quarter is where we come back,” Lady Braves junior Madison Alstrom-Beans said.
    Senior Vernae Ramoth agreed.
“Once we just get that click before halftime, then we do a lot better,” she said.
Sitka sophomore Chloe Morrison said that “we kind of just started to relax... (but) we couldn’t relax.”
“We were being complacent,” Elefante added. Her team needs to work on the press more going into the future, she said.

Edgecumbe’s third quarter run was not enough, and the Wolves regained their lead in the fourth.
“We just had this nervousness of playing them, because ‘Oh, we need to get this.’ And I feel like our nerves just got to us... because we have to go through them to go to state,” Ramoth said.
“We didn’t drive to the basket, attack the basket enough. And we didn’t move our feet on defense,” Alstrom-Beans said.
Elefante concluded that the Wolves did a solid job getting to the free throw line. Sitka took 30 free throws, making two-thirds of them.
“We did a good job getting to the line, and teamwork,” Elefante said.
Both teams compete this weekend, Sitka at home and Edgecumbe in Valdez. The local schedule is below.
