Runners Celebrate Herring in 5k

Twenty runners competed in the annual Herring Protectors 5 kilometer race Sunday, going from under the O'Connell Bridge to the Coast Guard gate past the airport and back, hitting a brief period of fair weather during a rainy spring.

The first across the finish line was Mike Schinke, who completed the course in 20:22. Anna Laffrey was the fastest woman on the course, completing the race in 21:18.

Along with the runners, there were 10 walking participants, who were not timed.
