Dear Editor: This summer, Brave Heart Volunteers has been the recipient of much generosity and support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals in our community. It began with a financial gift from the Sitka Rotary Club that allowed us to purchase signs bearing our new logo, which was created and donated by Tlingit artist Jerrod Galanin. We cannot thank you enough.
We also had three businesses host fundraisers for BHV: Beak Restaurant and Fisheye Coffee hosted a Fill-the-Heart mug fundraiser in July, and Ludvig’s Bistro hosted a bowls and chowder event in August. We are so grateful to you and for every dollar you collected in support of BHV.
Also, our September 2021 Buoys & Art online auction would not have been possible without the kind support of so many. First, we sincerely appreciate the artists who donated their time and incredible talent: Francis Brann, Cleo Brylinski, Cinnamon Dockham, Anne Doyle, Angie Eaton, Fiona Ferguson, Randy Ferguson, Michele Friedman, Jerrod Galanin, David Gross, Alice Hanson, Pat Kehoe, Sarah Joan Lawrie, Steve Lawrie, Laura Kaltenstein, Cara Murray, Gaylen Needham, DJ Robidou, Robert Rose, Libby Stortz, Amy Sweeney and Columbus Wichman.
We also thank the businesses that generously sponsored our auction: Davis Realty, White’s Inc., Edward Jones, and Dr. Ross Marley, DMD. Other businesses kindly allowed us to display buoys and art including Galanin & Klein, Alaska Pure Sea Salt, Russell’s, and the Island Artists Gallery, which also presented an online art class taught by Pat Kehoe on how to paint buoys. Additionally, we are immensely grateful to everyone who bid on the auction items and helped make the fundraiser a success.
Lastly, and certainly not least, we would like to thank KCAW Raven Radio and the Daily Sitka Sentinel for their constant support and willingness to publicize BHV events. We especially recognize Sentinel staff writer Ariadne Will, who went above and beyond this summer, including presenting at our volunteer training for Outer Coast students, and writing an article about the auction that was picked up by the Associated Press.
In all, we offer a huge Brave Heart thank you to everyone has helped sustain our organization through the pandemic, including all of our faithful individual donors. We are sincerely grateful to you all.
