Child Mortality
Dear Editor: A new UNICEF report released this week shows that while the mortality rate of children under the age of five has fallen by more than half since 1990, much work remains. According to the latest data, we’re still losing 11 children under the age of 5 every single minute, mostly of preventable or treatable causes like diarrhea and pneumonia. That’s 16,000 children dying each day. We now have the chance to end these needless deaths in our lifetime.
The bipartisan Reach Every Mother and Child Act (S.1911), introduced this summer in the U.S. Senate, aims to end preventable maternal and child deaths by 2035. It will preserve important reforms into law so that USAID, our main development agency, is more efficient and effective. What’s more, the Reach Act will accomplish all this at no extra cost to taxpayers.
As our kids start another school year, let’s urge Congress to vote on this important legislation so that every child in the world has the same chance to thrive.
