Poverty Rate
Dear Editor: Did you know that more than one in eight of our neighbors lives below the poverty line? That is according to data released Sept. 12 by the Census Bureau. Unfortunately, Congress is considering proposals that could make things far worse.
The good news is the poverty rate is falling, and federal programs like SNAP (formerly food stamps) and refundable tax credits lifted nearly 12 million people out of poverty in 2016. Gutting these programs to pay for a tax break for millionaires is not acceptable. We hope we can count on our members of Congress to stand with families and kids in Alaska. Write-In Candidate
Dear Editor: My name is Kitty Sopow and I am running for Assembly as a write-in candidate.
I grew up in St. Louis and lived there until moving to Sitka in 2012 to work with Sitka Tribe as an AmeriCorps volunteer. This allowed me to experience Sitka’s diverse communities and make a positive impact. Since then, I’ve worked with various organizations conducting research with subsistence users and examining their relationship to resources. As well as doing research, I’m completing my graduate degree in anthropology to better understand relationships between communities, governments, and resources.
As an Assembly member, I’d love to work on cost-of-living and sustainability issues. Though I’ve only lived here for five years, I love calling Sitka home and I’m committed to this community. If elected, I’d be honored to serve, listening to community members and making decisions that will benefit this town for its current and future residents.
