Municipal Election
Dear Editor: We are voting for Mayor Steve Eisenbeisz and Assembly members Kevin Mosher and Scott Saline in the upcoming municipal election.
The current Assembly members have worked cooperatively and productively to address the challenges facing our community. While they don’t always agree, they are able to discuss disagreements in a civil manner, and have come up with creative solutions to Sitka’s problems. Taking over maintenance of school facilities to address the shortfall in state funding for Sitka School District is just one example of good leadership by this Assembly.
Serving on the Sitka Assembly comes with a steep learning curve. We believe that it is in the best interest of the community for our current mayor and Assembly members to continue in their roles.

Ban on Idling
Dear Editor: I listened to the candidate’s forum the other night on KCAW, and it seemed, possibly as might be expected, that all the candidates totally dismissed the idea of a ban on idling. Some with outright scorn, but at least one with the recognition that it is unpleasant (not to mention unhealthy) to be sitting next to a vehicle that is pumping out toxins into the air that you are breathing.
Unenforceable, they all proclaimed.
Sure. So don’t even try.
Like the ban that exists on using a cell phone while driving – a practice even more dangerous, and totally unenforced. And ubiquitous – the streets are filled with drivers on phones.
Instead of urging people to think about the consequences of their actions on our air, better to maybe just get pedestrians off the streets?
That baby in a stroller, being pushed past someone’s spewing exhaust pipe, right at her lung level? Off the streets with her!
Will we become mere bit players in some macabre dystopian sci-fi horror film where nothing living moves on the streets, only machines?
Well, except the 9,764* tourists on Lincoln Street...
