Dear Editor: The Smart Start of the school year for the Sitka School District has been about as good as it could be, considering the circumstances and conditions brought on by COVID-19. And if or when we need to go totally virtual for a while, we will be prepared this year.
Virtual instruction will be possible because of an incredible partnership we have developed to make certain that every student will have a direct connection with their teachers. Every student K through eighth grade will have an iPad, and all high school students will have a laptop computer.
This would not have been possible without the partnership with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. They used their CARES funding to purchase more than a third of the total iPads and Laptops. It was truly a generous commitment that every student in the district to have connectivity.
Other partners include the Alaska Association of School Boards through grant funding, and the Assembly through their CARES funding, and the commitment of our board to budget the remainder.
These are challenging times, and good people will always arise when needed. That’s what makes Sitka such a special place.
