Sitka Police Department received the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.

September 7

At 9:15 a.m. a carry-on bag was reported missing at the airport. Police have opened a case on the apparent theft.

Bethel Police Department asked Sitka officers to interview a person here.

Public Works reported finding hypodermic needles at Moller ball field. Police picked up the needles and disposed of them.

A black bike was reported left in front of mailboxes on Sirstad Street.

Police assisted in catching a dog running at large in the 1900 block of HPR and returning it to the owner.

A teen who hadn’t returned home for several hours was located and taken home.

A fender bender was reported in the 300 block of Lincoln Street at 2:12 p.m. The incident was documented for insurance purposes and the drivers were given self-report forms.

At 2:34 p.m. flaggers at DeGroff and SMC reported a driver had passed without stopping for six times. Officers tracked down the driver and warned him he must stop at the flaggers’ command.

At 4:36 p.m. a vehicle hit a light pole in the police parking lot, knocking one of the lights loose, which hit and broke the windshield of another vehicle. Police coned off the area while repairs were made.

September 8

At 4:36 a.m. a sow and two bear cubs were found to have wandered into a fenced area behind a church in the 500 block of Monastery. Officers saw them get out and move on. Fish and Game was notified.

At 7:28 a.m. a caller said someone unknown had called her on her land line throughout the night.

 

Emergency Calls

Sitka Fire Department received six ambulance calls Wednesday.

 

Sitka Police

George Yocum, 23, was arrested on a warrant on a 2021 charge of driving under the influence.

 

Coast Guard

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka on Wednesday medevacked a 65-year-old Hoonah woman with respiratory failure.

 

The helicopter launched at about 11 p.m., flew the woman to Juneau, and was back in Sitka at 2:20 a.m. today.

 

Motorcycle Rider,

Moose Collide

A motorcycle rider is in critical condition in an Anchorage hospital after colliding with a moose Wednesday morning at Mile 1413 on the Alaska Highway, Troopers report.

Troopers got a report at 5:47 a.m. that the man was lying unconscious on the roadway, following the collision. He was medevacked, and troopers dispatched the severely injured moose.
