Police Blotter
Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
September 6
At 2:26 p.m. a caller said a man was sleeping in the woods near 814 HPR.
Two bikes were turned in.
At 7:48 p.m. a caller reported seeing a man assaulting a woman in a lodge on Katlian. Officers were advised.
At 9 p.m. a caller said a man was behaving aggressively toward customers in a store at 705 HPR. Officers contacted the man, who agreed to leave.
A caller reported finding drug paraphernalia in an employee’s room.
September 7
At 2:39 a.m. possible drug abuse was reported at Starrigavan. Officers contacted three juveniles and a man in a vehicle. Charges are to be forwarded.
A caller said a driver had gone into the opposite lane several times. The driver told an officer he was trying to avoid bicyclists and pedestrians.
Callers said a man was yelling at a woman, at 3800 HPR, and something about “a gun” was heard. Troopers found it was an argument, and the two denied saying anything about a gun.
Fireworks were heard at 2718 HPR at 6:44 p.m., and near Kramer Avenue at 6:52 p.m.
A woman said her juvenile son was hitting and threatening her and had held a knife to his abdomen. An officer talked to the two and calmed the son.
A caller said her daughter was refusing to leave and was being abusive. Officers talked to the daughter and a man and they agreed to leave.
At 11:48 p.m. a caller said a large dog tied up outside a bar had bitten her. She declined to go to a hospital but was worried the dog might bite someone else.
September 8
A caller said a man was lying on the sidewalk at 201 Lincoln. An officer found he was intoxicated and took him to his hotel.
At 12:31 a.m. a caller said her husband was to have been back from fishing but when she called him the connection was bad and now he wasn’t answering. She called back later to report she’d gotten hold of him and he’d told her he was out the road on his boat drinking with friends.
A Kaagwaantaan Street resident said someone is camping on her property. Police gave her some options.
At 10:26 a.m. a caller said a man said he was going to harm himself. He told police he wasn’t going to harm himself and a relative would take him to church.
A caller said a man was taking boulders out on SMC, past Whale Park. Police talked to the man, who agreed to put them back.
A caller said a husky in a truck might be in distress. The owner said the windows are down and the dog barks at passersby. Later, the dog owner said someone put a Styrofoam cup full of water through the window, and spilling it.
At 2:16 p.m. a caller reported a woman screaming and a man taking off running at Moller Field. Police determined no crime was involved.
Kids were seen damaging a tree in the Crescent harbor greenbelt area.
A store said a woman tried to cash a check that she claimed to own. Police are investigating it as a fraud.
A resident asked for help contacting her mom, who had sent her an “SOS text message.” It was found the mom had been exploring settings on her phone and had accidentally sent it.
A woman said she loaned a bike to a friend, who hadn’t returned it. She was advised of her options.
A Lincoln Street store owner reported being burglarized.
September 9
At 1:16 a.m. a 911 caller said people were arguing at Pioneer Park. Police talked to one; the other had left.
Sitka Police
Alesa Williams, 27, was charged with disorderly conduct and violating conditions of release Friday.
Jake J. Vachek, 24, was charged early Saturday with violating conditions of release by reportedly consuming alcohol.
Damien C. Soto, 21, was charged Saturday with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
Louis J. Handerson, 46, was cited for driving with a revoked license.
Gus Nelson, 28, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for failure to appear for a calendar call on an original charge of theft in the second degree and forgery in the second degree.
Janet Joseph, 42, was charged with violating conditions of release Saturday. She provided a PBT of .331 and was taken to a hospital to be evaluated. Today she was charged with violating conditions of release for allegedly consuming alcohol.
Matthew Hartshorn, 24, was arrested on a warrant Saturday for failure to maintain contact with an officer and violating conditions of release.
Kevin J. David, 18, was charged with minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol.
Cedar Mayo, 29, was cited Sunday for marijuana consumption in public and charged with tampering with evidence and violating release conditions.
Charges Filed
Vaughn Dalton, 23, was charged Saturday with two counts of assault on a peace officer in the fourth degree, criminal trespass in the second degree and resisting arrest after an incident involving Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Police said in a dispatch report that Dalton refused to leave a construction zone on Katlian Bay Road and appeared to be under the influence. Officers said troopers broke off contact after the man refused to comply, and a foot pursuit followed. After he was placed in custody he was taken to the hospital for evaluation after being tased and pepper-sprayed, police said.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire department dispatched one ambulance Friday, six on Saturday, one Sunday and one today before 10 a.m.
At 8:33 p.m. Friday a fire truck was sent to 200 Flume Circle after burned food set off a detector.
At 2:39 p.m. Saturday a fire truck was sent to 406 Monastery Street, to help a woman down from the roof, where she had gone to make repairs.
At 12:28 a.m. Sunday a fire truck went to the top of Harbor Mountain Road to put out an unattended bonfire, which was smoldering when firefighters arrived, the department said.
