Posted

Services for Michael Edward Dalton, a fisherman, are scheduled August 30 in Kake.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Kake Community Hall with dinner to follow at 5 p.m.

Michael died July 28 at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 35.

He was born Aug. 24, 1989, in Sitka, the son of Thelma Jane (Grant) and David Warren Dalton. His mother died when he was young, and from the age of 10 months he was raised by his grandparents, Wallace and Joyce James, in Kake.

As a commercial and subsistence fisherman, Michael had lived in Sitka off and on since 2009; in Port Armstrong in 2022; and in Petersburg this year.

Michael was very personable, and loved everyone. A favorite activity was sending and receiving phone calls from his many relatives and friends. He also enjoyed taking friends and family out on his boat to harvest seaweed, gumboots, sockeye.

He liked hunting and loved moose season but most of all he loved to fish – he was heading out in his boat on the day he fell ill.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother and father, Thelma Jane Grant and David Warren Dalton; his grandmother, Joyce James; and maternal grandparents, Tom Grant and Charlene Jackson.

He is survived by his grandfather, Wallace James, of Sitka and Kake;  his sister, Cassanda Grant Rademacher (Justin)  and niece Sandra Rademacher, of Petersburg; aunt Sarah Smith (Michael) and cousins Corey James-Kadake, Chandler Kadake, Hayley Smith, Michael Smith Jr., and Jaycee Smith, all of Sitka; uncle Mitchell James in Seattle, and cousin Zachary James of Haines; and maternal aunts Ramona Brooks, Tonia Grant and Delia Dement, and numerous cousins, all of Petersburg.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Shaquanie, Tim Demmert, Travis Adams, Dave Thomas, Kevin Martin, Robert Hughes, Matthew Ashenfelter, Alex Padgett and Josh Wooton.
