Services for Elmo Kay Mills Jr. will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Harrigan Centennial Hall. A potluck will follow.
Elmo died on July 4 at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. He was 72.
Elmo was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Dec. 31, 1953, the son of Cecilia (Cavanaugh) and Elmo Kay Mills Sr. Both his parents were in the military and moved their family around as ordered, to Germany, Texas, and Washington, finally settling in Alaska. Elmo moved to Sitka in the mid 1990s, and quickly found his forever home.
Elmo was well-known around Sitka, often seen watching construction projects around town take shape, showing up for all the local basketball games, and cheering for his favorite basketball team, the Utah Jazz.
He retired from the Hames Corporation after many years of service.
Elmo is survived by his sisters, Patricia Mills of Juneau, and Pamela Gaddis (Tom) of Dallas, Oregon; brothers Bob Mills (Isabel) of Kake, and Ron Mills of Metlakatla; and numerous nieces and nephews from California to Anchorage.
Pallbearers will be Tom Gamble, Keith Brady, Jon Fish, Rob Mills, Jonny Mills and Brett Wilcox.
Honorary pallbearers are Bob Mills, Ron Mills, Tom Gaddis, Ken Jackson Jr., Scott Jackson, Cyrus Mills, Zach Mills, Shaquille Mills and Martin Nobleman.
The family of Elmo thanked the community of Sitka "for always showing Elmo love and kindness throughout his years here."
