Sitka Community Choir

Posted

Dear Editor: I recently had the simple pleasure of joining the Sitka Community Choir for the very first time. What began as a room of individual voices – friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers of all ages – quickly became something far greater. As we practiced and sang, those separate voices blended into a shared sound, unexpectedly rich and moving.

There’s something powerful about making music together. No one voice carries the song; it’s the listening, the adjusting, and the willingness to be part of something larger that creates harmony. In that space, differences fade, replaced by a sense of connection and common purpose.

When our community and nation often feel divided, experiences like this remind me of what community can look like at its best. We don’t need to agree on everything to stand side by side and create something meaningful together.

For our performance last Sunday in the Performing Arts Center, we weren’t strangers – we were a choir.  And that was a connection I will carry beyond the final note.
