Sitka Visit

Posted

Dear Editor: My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting your lovely city recently (Norwegian Joy 6/24/2025). We took a walking tour from a very able guide who was informative and answered our questions.

Having recently read James’ Michener’s ‘‘Alaska’’ in preparation for our trip, I was delighted to see many of the historic sites mentioned in his novel. Although, a work of fiction, there was a lot of history and geographic references to bring it alive.

We especially liked the hilltop view where transfer of Alaska from Russia to the U.S. took place and Alaska statehood is celebrated every October. Viewing the historic Orthodox Church was also moving. The weather during our visit was beautiful. Being from Buffalo, N.Y., we are not strangers to adverse weather. Our summers are glorious as are yours.

We will long remember our visit and have discussed it fondly with family and friends.
