STARLINK – Workers look over 12-foot-tall dome-shaped satellite receiver equipment being installed on the roof of the Alaska Communications (ACS) building on Cathedral Way August 20. The initial purpose of the Starlink Community Gateway equipment was to provide continuous high speed internet connection for the new Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Medical Center, bypassing reliance on underwater fiber optic cables. ACS will also be able to provide other Sitka businesses and entities services over this system as well, ACS said in a presentation to the Sitka Historic Preservation in June. To minimize the visual impact of the rooftop equipment ACS said it would combine careful placement, architectural screening, color treatment, and low-profile engineering with our installation.
