Support of Begich

Posted

Dear Editor: This letter is in support of Tom Begich, candidate for governor, whom I believe is capable of grappling with the immense challenges facing our next state leader.

I attended both of his public meet and greets here in Sitka, and have found an excellent overview of his extensive qualifications, policies and vision for Alaska on his website: Tom Begich For Alaska.

Tom demonstrates a broad and deep understanding of what a governor can accomplish for the benefit of the people of Alaska, and he has the policy proposals to succeed! His 10-point policy agenda includes addressing energy prices with a balanced approach to utilizing our natural resources; improving education; health care and housing cost affordability; growing high paying jobs; prioritizing Alaska fisheries; and defending democracy.

Ask him what his views are on some of our biggest issues and he responds with clear descriptions of his proposals to resolve those issues. Case in point, the ferry system: establish a dedicated funding stream and appoint an independent supervisory board comprised of community members from ferry dependent communities. He calls the ferry system the most expensive toll road in the country (and the only toll road in Alaska) and wants to change that!

What a relief to have a candidate with a clear vision and coherent, inclusive ideas for a healthy and sustainable future for Alaskans, with the capability of conveying his strategies completely and personably to everyday people. Such understanding only comes with time and dedicated professional and personal involvement. I believe Tom has achieved this very well; his second nature you might say.

No matter what your candidate(s) or party preference is, be sure to vote in the primary election on Aug. 18! Our democratic freedom depends on it, now more than ever.
