Swiss racer Franjo von Allmen leads super-G after 20 racers, in line for 3rd Olympic gold in Bormio

BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Franjo von Allmen of Switzerland leads the Olympic super-G after the top 20 racers Wednesday and is in line for his third Olympic gold medal of the Milan Cortina Games.

There are still a handful of lower-ranked skiers still to take the course who could turn in a surprise finish and figure in the medal mix. A total of 42 racers are in the field on a warm day.

Von Allmen finished in a time of 1 minute, 25.32 seconds along the Stelvio course to grab a 0.13-second lead over American Ryan Cochran-Siegle. Marco Odermatt of Switzerland currently holds the bronze spot.

Von Allmen is on the brink of becoming the third men's Alpine ski racer to win three events at one Winter Olympics. The other two are legends of the sport, Jean-Claude Killy of France, who won three at the 1968 Grenoble Games, and Austrian Anton “Toni” Sailer, a three-time winner at the 1956 Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

The 24-year-old von Allmen won the downhill on Saturday and paired with Tanguy Nef to win the inaugural team combined event Monday.

Cochran-Siegle captured a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Games.
