With the school year back in full swing, local athletes returned to form this weekend from the swimming pool to the volleyball courts and cross country trails.
The Sitka High Lady Wolves volleyball squad opened their season with a 3-0 win over Mt. Edgecumbe Braves on Friday and repeated that performance Saturday. Friday’s set scores were 16-25, 8-25, and 16-25. Saturday set scores were 15-25, 15-25, and 18-25.
Sitka High’s junior varsity volleyball squad went 6-2 with their counterparts across the bridge this weekend.
On the cross country trails, the SHS Wolves’ boys team pulled out a win against Mt. Edgecumbe and the Ketchikan High Kings in the first travel meet of the season. The Region V race is scheduled for this weekend in Ketchikan.
Silas Demmert, 17:45, and Kobi Weiland, 18:14, led the pack for the Wolves, claiming second and third place respectively. For the Braves, Landon Varga led, taking fourth place. Kayhi’s Mickey Lapinski took first in the boys race at 17:21.
On the girls side, Kayhi led the scoreboard, but Lady Wolves’ Tawny Smith finished first at 20:30, followed by her teammate Anna Prussian 15 seconds behind.
For Mt. Edgecumbe, Jelsey Gologergen came in first, claiming tenth place at 25:10.
In the water, the Sitka High swimming squad opened their season with a virtual meet.
The Lady Wolves’ Jordan Gagner, Grace Harang, Emma Gassman, and Razie Guillory finished the 200 medley in two minutes flat. The girls team, which was a relay powerhouse last year as well, also swam the 400 free in 3:52:79. Harang, Guillory, Sophia Schwantes, and Gassman swam that event, edging out even Sitka’s boys team by over five seconds in an impressive showing.
The Wolves boys team, including Bridger Bird, Samuel Jones, David Davis, and Jaden Costelo swam the 200 free in 1:45:76.
Due to the virtual format of the swim meet, results for other teams are not yet posted.
Full pieces on this weekend’s sporting events will appear in the Sentinel throughout the week.
