Voter Registration Event

Posted

Dear Editor: Check your voter registration at the Harbor Mountain Brewery, 7-9 p.m. October 2, while you listen to Maia and the Pedal Boys.

People will be at the brewery from 6-8 p.m. to aid you in checking that your voter registration is current and accurate, and help you register utilizing the State of Alaska Division of Elections website online forms. There will also be information on early in-person voting.

This is a non-partisan event, and everyone is encouraged to make their voices heard. These are very turbulent times politically and sometimes in Sitka, it is easy to feel isolated and unable to have much input into what our government does. If you worry about affordable health care, women’s rights, ICE treatment of U.S. citizens and immigrants, freedom of speech, a free press, climate issues, along with many other issues, this mid-term election is your chance to be heard.

Right now, your vote matters a great deal. Alaska is a place where elections are not infrequently decided by a very small margin of votes. I may or may not agree with your position on the various issues, but I really want everyone to go to the polls on or before November 3. Consider voting early in-person at Harrigan Centennial Hall from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. between October 20 and November 2.

October 4 is the last day for Alaskans to register to vote or to update their voter registration before the November 3 midterm elections. It is important for all voters to check their voter registration before October 4, to help avoid issues when they go to vote.

More than 600 U.S. citizens were mistakenly removed from Alaska’s list of active voters earlier this year. Although they can still cast a vote this year, voters removed from the active list will not appear on the register of their local precinct and will have to provide additional identity information in order to cast a “questioned ballot.”

The event is organized by Pat Kehoe, Donna Donohoe and Joann Torgeson, who are affiliated with Sitkan’s For Peace Democracy.

We also want to encourage people to remember to vote for the local Sitka election on or before October 6.
