Dear Editor: The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 and the Ganaxteidee Clan are sponsoring fundraising events for a new electric wheelchair for Carlene Larsen, long time Sitka resident and member of the ANS and Ganaxteidee.
Her current Medicaid funded wheelchair is literally duct taped together and has continual breakdowns. There are no entities, not SEARHC, nor SAIL, nor businesses in Sitka to service her vehicle, and she has one year left with Medicaid to apply for a replacement. A query was put on Sitka Chatters, and that day we had a response from a local Sitkan who had one in his garage that he was ready to let go for a very generous low price. Almost brand new with all the ‘‘bells and whistles’’ to keep her mobile to get groceries, and other necessities, so life can go on!
The ANS is having two fundraisers at the ANB Founders Hall on July 3 starting at 11 a.m, until sold out: baked salmon bowls, rice, tartar sauce, dirty sodas and lemonade for $15, and big fry bread for $5; and on July 4 from 4-7 p.m. Indian tacos, ‘‘walking tacos’’ (like takeaway), fresh pico de gallo, homemade salsa, dirty sodas, lemonade, for $15, and popsicles 50 cents and desserts.
We would like to thank Jesus Diaz and Pancho Rodriguez for periodically troubleshooting and servicing her wheelchair when it won't start, and chef Adriana Achee of Mexicala for her contributions to the upcoming fundraisers.
ANS Camp 4 and the Ganaxteidee invite all of Sitka to support Carlene's mobility and independence at the fundraisers, or by mailing a check made out to ANS Camp 4 with Carlene Larsen in the memo to: ANS Camp 4, Box 2, 235 Katlian Street, Sitka, AK 99835.
For further information call Stephanie at the ANS office 907 623-2352. Truly, it takes a whole community to take care of each other when life changing events occur. Gunalcheesh!
Karen Lucas,
ANS Camp 4 secretary
