The Sitka High Wolves swim team finished in a combined third place with 621 points at the Petersburg Invitational over the weekend. Juneau-Douglas won with 890, Thunder Mountain was second with 678, Ketchikan fourth with 598, Petersburg 433, Wrangell 157, and Craig 120. The Sitka girls placed second behind JDHS and the Wolves’ boys were fourth behind JDHS, TMHS, and KTN.
“It went good,” Sitka coach Ben Adams said. “Multiple people debuted and we have kids of all different abilities. We had kids get faster times than they did at the beginning of previous seasons which is nice as they will probably track along and improve at the end of the year. For the newcomers it was just a chance to see them swim and see where we are at with them.”
Sitka veterans did well on Friday. The girls saw Kyleigh McArthur winning the 200 free in 2:08.93, Jessica Davis the 100 fly in 1:04.24, and Grace Harang the 100 free in 56.27 and 100 breast in 1:13.90.
Kai Frawley, Jordan Gagner, Sophie Schwantes and Molly Blackmon won the 200 free relay in 1:47.22 and Davis, Harang, Schwantes and McArthur won the 200 medley relay in 1:58.70.
On the boys side, McKinley Janik won the 100 fly in 1:00.72 and 200 free in 1:58.69 and Jacob Gagner the 200 individual medley in 2:11.90. Janik, T. Frawley, Gagner and Hunter Littlefield placed second in the 200 medley relay on Friday with 1:53.92.
“We weren’t really trying to win on Friday,” Adams said. “We had multiple people trying new events or we have them swim their off events and swim their solid events on Saturday. So they are more rested for their better swims. We like to mix up the relays and make it fun and interesting.”
On Saturday, Harang won the grueling 500 free in 5:33.43 with K. Frawley sixth in 6:18.26 and Erin Blankenship posting a 7:02.77 and J. Davis won the 100 back in 1:04.84 with Gagner fourth at 1:12.09.
The girls 200 free relay of K. Frawley, Gagner, Schwantes, and Blackmon won in 1:54.82 and Blackmon, McArthur, Harang, and Davis won the 400 free relay in 3:58.75.
Tytan Frawley placed second in the boys 100 breast on Saturday 1:14.09.
“We do quite a bit of preparation for each new group going into the season,” Adams said. “We make sure we review every aspect of swimming and how meets are run and how scoring works. Ultimately the captains help the new swimmers manage their time on deck and that things go by really quickly.
“What I tell the kids, and what I truly believe, is if they are trying hard and trying to perfect the little things that is what I am looking for and that is most important. If you are swimming fast, but you are doing it sloppy, that is less impressive to me than if you are swimming slow but you are doing it correctly but you are just tired because you have been training hard. The upper class has shown that they have really done well with retaining the knowledge and skills we go over every year. I was impressed with the whole team.”
Sitka will host a meet on September 14-15.
