Dear Editor: As a recreational enthusiast and longtime volunteer coach and parent in Sitka, I was happy to learn about how Proposition 1 will dedicate the surplus income from the tobacco tax and Sitka Community Hospital sale proceeds to a fund to support recreational facilities throughout Sitka, both existing and new.
Sitka has a long tradition of having strong youth sports programs, and has recently seen numerous state championships in track and field, baseball and softball.
For Sitka to remain competitive and continue to offer its youths and adults healthy alternatives to screentime among other less health distractions, we must continue to fund and support our recreational facilities. This proposition will ensure Sitka is better positioned to do so; by investing in our recreational facilities much like Juneau and Ketchikan’s residents have already done with their funding of impressive indoor and new turf facilities that help families and friends stay healthy and active year round, well into the future.
