Rachel Jones Named Magistrate for Sitka
By Sentinel Staff
Local attorney Rachel Jones started work as Sitka’s new magistrate judge Sept. 25.
Jones graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, and was in private practice in Sitka before her appointment in August to the magistrate position.

She replaces Senior Pro Tem Judge Leonard Devaney, who retired on Sept. 6.
Trevor Stephens, presiding judge for the 1st Judicial District, said Jones was selected after a statewide recruiting process and interviews with other top candidates.
“... Ms. Jones stood out due to her demonstrated legal abilities and her prior experience with the Sitka court,” Stephens said.
Before going into private practice, Jones served as a clerk for Superior Court Judge David George of Sitka.
Magistrate judges hear mostly district court matters such as domestic violence petitions, small claims and minor offense trials; arraignments, summonses and arrest warrants; and search warrants, bail hearings and petitions to revoke probation. They also preside over trials in which the parties agree to be heard by the magistrate judge.
Jones will have rotating on-call evening, weekend and holiday duties and will serve as a special master to the Superior Court for duties that include uncontested divorces, dissolutions of marriage and motions in contested domestic relations matters.
Other responsibilities include handling certain probate, Child in Need of Aid, and delinquency cases; mental health and alcohol commitment proceedings; creditor-debtor matters, landlord-tenant issues and other matters of the Superior Court made by referral, said a news release from the Alaska Court System.
