Salmon Derby Canceled; First Time in 65 Years
By Sentinel Staff
In response to the global pandemic, the Sitka Sportsman’s Association announced today that the Sitka Salmon Derby will not be held this year.
“After monitoring the news, reports and Alaska’s social mandates it would be irresponsible for us to continue in the current environment,” derby officials said in a news release.
For Sportsman’s Association president and Derby chairman John McCrehin, the annual Salmon Derby is a family event, and a sign that summer is on the way. His children have worked in the Derby, and McCrehin recalled participating as a high schooler in the 1970s.
“This is the twentieth year I’ve been on the barge, and to me as a Derby chairman and now president, this is kind of a kick off to summer for Sitkans,” McCrehin said in an interview.
“It brings families together… you see just about any combo of family members out there competing,” he added.
It will be the first time in its 65-year history that the derby has not been held. The five-day event had been scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend, May 23, 24 and 25, and the next Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31.
The release emphasized the importance of maintaining the health of all involved.
“We are very disappointed to make the announcement but we have a duty of care to our volunteers, officials, merchants and of course our treasured angler participants,” the release said.
The Sportsman’s Association added that donors will be contacted individually about the best way to refund their donations.
