BLOOD MOON – A “blood moon” is seen behind the Lutheran Church crosses late Thursday during a cloudless night. The rare total lunar eclipse, which was visible to half the globe, is caused by the alignment of the earth, sun and full moon. The last total lunar eclipse visible in the United States was in 2022. The next lunar eclipse will be in 2026. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

National Trail
Day is Saturday
Sitka National Historical Park will observe National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6. It is a day set aside to celebrate the many trails throughout the nation that give access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, and physical and mental health.
‘‘Circumstances of the past few months have given us all an awareness of how much these activities contribute to the quality of our lives,’’ the park said in a press release. ‘‘Sitka is fortunate to have a variety of trails in town or a short distance away that are still available to us at a time when other opportunities are limited.’’
Sitka NHP encourages everyone to get outdoors on one of the trails.
SNHP trails are open 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
‘‘We highly recommend that all visitors stay safe by practicing social distancing and following other CDC guidelines related to the COVID-19 virus,’’ the park said. ‘‘Because of health safety concerns, the visitor center and park restrooms remain closed.’’
It is important for visitors to the park to follow policies regarding dogs and bicycles. People can walk dogs on park trails but must keep them on a leash and under control, and dispose of pet waste properly. Bicycles are to be walked in the park at all times.
Virtual activities for National Trails Day can be found on the website for the American Hiking Society, https://americanhiking.org/national-trails-day/.
For more information or questions about park trails, contact the main park number at 747-0110.

For information call Jeff Budd at 747-4821.
St. Gregory’s

The Ave Maria Chapel will be opened during those hours for private prayer. Information can also be found on the parish website.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the scheduled maintenance of GCI’s fiberoptic cable starting March, 13th. CCTHITA’s public-spirited response to the outage is inspiring.
