2 More Test Positive For COVID in Sitka
By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer
Two more positive COVID-19 test results in Sitka were announced today.
Sitka’s positive test count is now at five (four resident, one nonresident).
The first of today’s two new cases was announced in an 8:55 a.m. news release from the Sitka Unified Command, following notification by the state Tuesday evening.
“The confirmed male patient (age 30 to 39) received COVID-19 testing on Tuesday, June 9,” the news release says. “The patient is quarantined at home. An investigation is currently underway to identify the source of the virus.”
Another positive case was announced later in the day by Public Health Nurse Denise Ewing. This one was a woman age 30 to 39, who was tested over the weekend, and is quarantined at home, Ewing said.
Authorities said both of the patients have COVID-19 symptoms, and contact tracing has started.
Ewing today stressed the importance of continuing to follow the basic steps for preventing and slowing the spread of the virus.
“It is crucial to be wearing masks and distancing,” she said today. “Continue to keep the health mandates of social distancing, wearing masks, and good hygiene.”
The State Division of Health and Social Services is reporting 573 cases statewide.
The dates the positive cases were reported in Sitka are April 25, March 25, June 4 (nonresident), and today, June 10.
Unified Command is the team responding locally to the pandemic, with members representing healthcare, city government, and emergency responders.
Today’s news release again stressed the importance of maintaining mitigation practices such as wearing a face mask and washing hands frequently.
“COVID-19 symptoms are similar to the flu – fever, aching, cough, shortness of breath, and sometimes decreased sense of taste and smell,” the UC release said. “If you are concerned you might have contracted the coronavirus contact the COVID hotline at 966-8799 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside of normal clinic hours, patients can contact the SEARHC 24/7 Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-613-0560 to be triaged by a registered nurse.
“Additional information on COVID-19 is available through the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) at https://covid19.alaska.gov/ and SEARHC at www.covid19.searhc.org.”
