Allen Graduates,
Earns Honors
Sabena Elisabeth Allen, a former resident of Sitka, graduated from Dartmouth College with a bachelor’s degree in Native American studies and a minor in geography.
She received the Native American writing prize for her senior honors thesis, titled “Narratives of Catastrophe in Tlingit Oral History.” Allen also received the Stacey Coverdale 1988 Memorial Award for academic excellence and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She plans to begin her PhD research in anthropology at the University of Chicago in the fall.
Allen, 20, is of the Raven moiety. Her Tlingit name is Andaxjoon. She belongs to the Ganaxteidi clan, and is a child of the Kaagwaantaan. She is the daughter of Rob Allen of Sitka and Heather MacLean of Biddeford, Maine, stepdaughter of Robin Sherman of Sitka, and granddaughter of Jane MacLean of Maine and Betty and Bob Allen of Sitka.
Playgroup Canceled
The Early Learning Program’s virtual playgroup is canceled for the duration of the summer.

Cleanup Event
For Boathouse
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society is hosting a boathouse grounds cleanup event 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 20, at the Japonski Island Boathouse.
Help is needed to clean up the grounds around the boathouse, including weeding, clearing brush, and picking up litter. Volunteers should sign up before attending, take a face covering, dress for outside work, and practice social distancing. If needed, SMHS can provide face coverings, and hand sanitizer will be made available throughout the event.
Organizers ask that individuals not attend the event if they are sick, have symptoms, or have been exposed to a person with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19.

Water Shut-Off
Scheduled Tonight
The city has rescheduled a temporary water shut-off in support of a private construction project connection to the city’s water main.
The temporary water outage will affect customers from 1500 Sawmill Creek Road to Gary Paxton Industrial Park at approximately 11 p.m. tonight through 3 a.m. Thursday.
‘‘The CBS will make every effort to inspect and oversee this private construction to make sure it minimizes the time the water is turned off,’’ a press release said.
The city said residents in the affected area should consider storing some water to last the duration of the outage. Once water is restored, some residents may experience air bubbles or cloudy water. If so, run the cold water taps until it clears.

Chowder on Sale
A halibut fish and chips and clam chowder feed, along with a garage and bake sale, is planned 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the American Legion Hall, 205 Lincoln Street.
Garage and bake sale items will be sold beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the fish and chips and chowder at 11 a.m.

Sitka Music Festival
Crab Dinner Sale Set
Sitka Music Festival will host a crab extravaganza this year for Father’s Day.
Dinners options will include either a full meal for two or crab only by the bag. Everything will be available for pick up between noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, at the UAS-Sitka Campus parking lot. Tickets are on sale at sitkamusicfestival.org or 747-6774.
The event is sponsored by Arrowhead Transfer and Alaska Marine Lines.
‘Virtual’ Music
Festival on Tap
The Sitka Music Festival will host a series of virtual concerts this month. New videos from Zuill Bailey, Yuliya Gorenman, Natasha Paremski and other artists will be released at sitkamusicfestival.org noon Thursdays and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays this month.
The special concerts also will be broadcast on Raven Radio at 10 a.m. Mondays. Program details are available at sitkamusicfestival.org.
