Wolves Win Tourney

The Sitka High Wolves baseball team went 3-0 in the Preseason Tournament against other Southeast squads on Moller Field this weekend.
“We’re the team to beat in Southeast,” head coach Matt Way said.

The boys won against Juneau-Douglas High School 6-3 on Thursday in a game that was close right up until the very end, he said.
On Friday, the team took on Thunder Mountain High School and garnered another victory in the 2-1 game.
“There were no errors,” Way said. “It was really clean baseball.”
Next, the Wolves beat Ketchikan High School on Saturday 1-0. The game was decided by a missed play by KayHi, Way said. At the bottom of the sixth, Sitka claimed 1 run because the catcher made a bad play to the pitcher.
While the games went in Sitka’s favor, Way said they were surprised they were all close matches.
“We usually swing really well – we have a good offense,” he said. “We would have liked to see our offense do a little bit better.”
But the team faced its opponents’ best pitchers, Way said.
“We had some good match ups on the mound,” he said. “They were all pretty tough for our hitters.”
The team’s offseason strength training really shone through during the tournament, though.
“It seems like our players were able to stay strong the entire weekend,” he said. “They did the work and it really shows.”
The Wolves play again April 28-29 in Ketchikan.
