RED AT THE ROUNDABOUT  – More than 200 demonstrators rally at the roundabout Wednesday afternoon in support of raising the state’s contribution to public schools. The Sitka School District faces a shortfall of $1.5 million to $3.2 million in the 2025 budget, depending on the amount the Legislature finally approves. The School Board is obligated to submit a budget to the Sitka Assembly by next Wednesday. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

He serves as the technical director for the Southeast Alaska Karate Championship held each year in Juneau. Artist of Month at

Centennial Hall

Sabra Jenkins’ quilt “Tides” is being displayed at  Harrigan Centennial Hall this month.

The quilt was pieced by Sabra Jenkins and quilted by Gwen Baggett of Snugglers Cove Quilting. It won Best of Show in 2009 from the Ocean Wave Quilters annual quilt show and Best of Show at the Southeast Alaska State Fair in Haines the same year. The block pattern is Ocean Waves with applique on top of quilt.

Jenkins was born and raised in Ketchikan and has always had an interest in sewing and quilting. At the University of Washington she took art and design and clothing construction courses.

She and her husband, a U.S. Public Health Service dentist, moved frequently around the United States and took advantage of available quilting and sewing classes. After moving to Sitka she studied under Janine Holzman and visiting quilt educators from all over the U.S., who were brought to Sitka through the Ocean Wave Quilters.

Jenkins said “Tides” evolved from the ocean wave quilt block.

‘‘As I stitched the blocks and added applique I kept getting more and more ideas,’’ she said. ‘‘I continue to work in my quilting studio every day and like to teach people how to quilt.’’
