Two Overdue From Fishing Found Safe

A search team found a couple safe and sound Wednesday night after the two were reported overdue from an overnight fishing trip.
SAR Capt. Lance Ewers said the couple had taken their 16-foot skiff out to a mining claim in Herring Cove Tuesday, planning to stay overnight and return Wednesday morning.
They texted friends and family around 1 p.m. Wednesday to say they were fine, and were planning to eat lunch and head home in the afternoon.
When they weren’t back by 9 p.m., and couldn’t be reached by cell phone, a friend called the U.S. Coast Guard and Sitka search and rescue, Ewers said.
A search team went out to Silver Bay in the city Emergency Response Vessel and at 10:30 p.m. found the couple in the area between Herring Cove and Bear Cove, Ewers said.
“They had been fishing and they lost track of time,” Ewers said. The ERV stood by while the two retrieved their groundline, and then escorted them back to town.
Ewers said it was a successful mission.
“It was really good that folks gave us a call, because you never know,” he said. “It ended well, and it all went off without a hitch.”
