Sitka Wrestlers Earn Narrow Win Over MEHS
By GARLAND KENNEDY

Wrestlers from both local high schools squared off before a sizable audience in the Performing Arts Center Tuesday in the final dual meet of the season.
Sitka High’s athletes earned a narrow, 31-29 victory over the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves.
Sitka coach Mike Callahan was happy not only with his team’s performance, but also with the atmosphere of the event as a whole.

“It went really smoothly. Rich Krupa (Sitka High activities director) put on a great show, awesome venue to watch wrestling!” Callahan said. “I had front row seats up on the stage, yet I felt like the audience in their seats got the real entertainment. Also, kudos and thanks to MEHS’ crew and coming across the bridge, they came and competed,” Callahan told the Sentinel. “It was an amazing night of wrestling.”
The event also was Sitka High’s senior night celebration. Sitka’s seniors are Jason Young, David Davis and Sam Johnson.
Overall, the Wolves won seven matches, while the Braves took five, though some matches were neck-and-neck for their duration.
Callahan credited Sam Johnson for much of the overall win. Johnson won by major decision against Edgecumbe’s Paraaq Nelson in the final match of the night. Wrestling in the 189-pound weight class, Nelson also faced Sitka’s Silas Ferguson, who won 9-8.
Top performing Sitka senior Jason Young won 9-6 against Edgecumbe’s R.J. Didrickson, also at 189 pounds.
In the 152-pound weight class, Edgecumbe’s Dalton Buffas came from behind and won against Sitka’s David Davis with a pin in the third period.
“Tuesday was a great night of wrestling for both teams and we are looking forward to the regional tournament,” MEHS coach Aaron Routon said after the meet.
Wrestlers will travel to Petersburg this weekend for the final regular season tournament of the season before the regional competition next weekend.

The Assembly decided Tuesday against municipal participation in the U.S. Bicentennial Year commemorative project because of various objections to the project proposed: construction of a Russian tea house pavilion on the Centennial Building parking lot. The estimated local share of the project would be $37,000.
