HATS OFF – Sitka High School graduates toss their mortarboards in the air after receiving their degrees Monday night in the Sitka High gym. This year 74 seniors graduated in a ceremony that included addresses by teacher Howard Wayne and class representative Nai’a Nelson, a performance by the symphonic band and a video of graduates. The following calls were recorded as of 8 a.m. today.

December 7

At 2:22 a.m. a security check was made at Harbor Mountain Road and HPR, and at 2:42 a.m. a check was made at HPR and Nelson Logging Road.

At 9:54 a.m. a caller reported a bungee cord and a long piece of metal were on the O’Connell Bridge, posing a traffic hazard. DOT was advised.

At 12:16 p.m. a traffic accident at HPR and Lake Street resulted in minor damage to two vehicles. Self-report forms were to be filled out.

A possible theft of services was reported in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. Police are investigating.

A parking problem arose at Pherson and Monastery streets at 5:20 p.m.

At 11:55 p.m. a security check was made in the 100 Herring Cove Road.

 

Emergency Calls

 

Sitka Fire Department received 10 ambulance calls Wednesday.

Dr. Arthur Cleveland, a former dean at Columbus State University in Georgia, was named the new president of Sheldon Jackson College, SJC officials announced today. He will be replacing C. Carlyle Haaland, who has held the position for four years.

Coaching and managing the Little League teams this year are John Abbott and John Calhoun, ANB; Dale and DeWayne Vilandre, Alaska Federal; Walt Barker, Elks; Frank Simmons and Frank Vilandre, Lions; Leo Bacon, Pat Ness, Cliff Robards and Bob Edenso, Moose; and Everett Webb, Sportsmen. Head umpire is Carl Karpstein.
