A man was reported in critical condition at Bartlett Regional Hospital after his plane crashed north of Juneau Sunday night, 35 miles northwest of Juneau, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard Air Station Sitka received a call from Sector Juneau at 5:38 p.m. after an emergency locator transmitter beacon signal went off from a small plane with one person aboard. After searching for an hour and 20 minutes, the crew found the single-engine fixed wing plane at the north end of Excursion Inlet. The Coast Guard said the plane fell 2,000 feet and crashed on land.
The survivor was extracted from the plane by a rescue swimmer, and hoisted into the helicopter. He was flown to Juneau, where EMTs met the helicopter crew and patient at the National Guard hangar, at 8:10 p.m. The Coast Guard reported he was in critical condition.
“Massive thanks and a job well done to the expeditious work of the aircrew that conducted this rescue,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matt Bitinas, a situation unit watchstander at Sector Southeast Alaska command center, in a news release. “This individual’s life was saved due to their actions.”

The Assembly decided Tuesday against municipal participation in the U.S. Bicentennial Year commemorative project because of various objections to the project proposed: construction of a Russian tea house pavilion on the Centennial Building parking lot. The estimated local share of the project would be $37,000.
