Immigration Policy

Dear Editor: “Another beautiful day.” That’s the comment I overheard while struggling to write this letter about news transfixing our nation – the incarceration of immigrant children on our southern boarders. Then I realized that is exactly what it is – another beautiful day – a chance to turn this around before more damage is done, before another child is harmed.

We are being heard. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is reading the letters, tweets, and comments we are making. She has made a strong statement opposing this policy and we can continue to insist that she and other representatives take action.

Our friends and relatives are annoying us on social media, posting articles, personal stories, links to fundraising campaigns, and encouragements to action. It reminds us we are not alone in our views and there is power in community.

People are donating money to support those taking action. A Silicon Valley couple initiated an online campaign to raise money for an organization providing legal services to immigrants. We can support these efforts.

Leaders are speaking out and acting up. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker canceled a deployment of National Guard troops to the border in opposition to this newest immigration policy. We can back these leaders.

Let’s make it a beautiful day, an inspiring democracy, and a hopeful world for our children.
